Submerged Reverie. 2024.
Oils on Canvas. Unframed.
In this painting, “Submerged Reverie”, I sought to capture the essence of solitude in a moment amidst the fluidity of water, which for me, symbolises a sanctuary away from the audible and visual noise of the outside world. I’ve tried to explore, in brush strokes, the transformative power of water and its intimate connection to the human spirit. Where the swimmer’s gaze is piercing and unwavering,
I hope that it meets the viewer with a quiet strength and perhaps an invitation into a private moment of introspection, a moment of deeply personal solace. The distortion and the abstract nature of light refraction and ripples in the water are a visual metaphor for the complexities of human experience – how our perceptions of what is really happening can be both opaque and transparent depending on what surrounds us.
There is an interplay of light and darkness – chaos and tranquility. And despite the disorienting distortion, the swimmer’s expression remains resolute. Water is a conduit for inner peace. Water is my solitude. I find liberation in the depths, and safe haven in water’s embrace. In this portrayal of a woman’s portrait from the vantage of being submerged underwater I aim to convey a sense of triumph over past adversity, but also a resilience of human spirit.
The play on light being a way of saying that despite the darkness that lingers in the depths of one’s past, there is the possibility of emerging into the light again. “Submerged Reverie” offers a glimpse into my soul but is intended also to evoke an exploration of one’s own humanity – to embrace the vulnerable, find beauty in imperfection, and emerge from the depths stronger, wiser, and alive.
